Elm wood Irish harp necklace

35.00

The Irish harp, though not as popularly well-known around the world as the shamrock for being an Irish symbol, is the official emblem of Ireland. This status dates back several centuries and the instrument’s history tells much about the history of the island.
This beautiful Irish harp necklace will be carved for you, or a loved one, In Irish elm, in my studio on the West of Ireland.

Description

Adorned with a lovely Trinity Celtic silver bail, this intricate Irish harp necklace features a piece of elm wood, recycled from musical instruments constructed by a local luthier. As a musician myself, I take enormous satisfaction in creating a necklace whose inherent wood has previously featured in a beautiful hand-made harp.

Considered one of the sacred trees in the Celtic world, elm is often associated with Mother and Earth Goddesses. In rural Ireland the elm tree was said to possess magical properties and was considered to be the home of the fairies.
In Irish folklore, carrying a leaf or twig of elm was said to help win the affection of someone you desired.

The Irish harp, (also called Celtic or Gaelic harp or Clarsach) has been the emblem of Ireland since medieval times. Wandering minstrels used to travel the country playing the harp, keeping Ireland’s legends alive.

Although there are many aspects to Irish heritage, traditions and culture, music is a very important one. In previous centuries, music and storytelling were the only forms of entertainment on an island that had no electricity and where only a small minority of the population were literate. On cold, dark evenings, villages would crowd together into their local pub to share a warm fire, hear stories and listen to music played by the local musicians (of course there was usually dancing too, which is where our traditional dancing originates from). It started a tradition that has been kept alive since then, as music is still a very important part of life in Ireland.

This unique Irish harp necklace is the perfect gift for anyone with Irish heritage or for someone who resonates with the Celtic myths and traditions of the natural world. More than just a piece of jewellery, this Irish harp necklace is a connection to Ireland’s past, a symbol of nature’s enduring beauty, and a testament to the artistry of craftsmen. It’s a thoughtful gift for a loved one or a meaningful addition to your own collection.
