Adorned with a quality cast and lead free pewter Trinity Celtic bail, this small Celtic love knot pendant features a piece of the ancient Irish Bog Yew.
Bog Yew comes from ancient forests that once covered Ireland. Huge trees have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. The wood is usually stained brown by tannin dissolved in the acidic water. Bog-wood represents the early stages in the fossilization of wood, with further stages ultimately forming lignite and coal over a period of many millions of years.
Considered one of the Sacred trees in the Celtic world, the Yew has long been associated with immortality & longevity. The ancient Irish built no temples. Instead, they treated nature as a temple. Trees were the oldest living things and were looked upon as sources of great wisdom. The Druids chose yew from which to make their wands, or staffs. Being so long-lived, it was seen as having powerful magical properties.
Celtic knots date back to the 3rd to 4th century B.C. They symbolize faith, declare love & unity between people, and even protect against evil spirits. They were also seen to represent infinity and eternal life, their endless intertwining curves symbolizing eternal love. In ancient Ireland, it was customary for lovers to exchange these knots, just as couples exchange rings these days.
This Celtic love knot pendant also makes a beautiful 5 Year Anniversary gift, as wood is the traditional gift representing 5 years of marriage.
