Irish bog oak Celtic cross pendant

(3 customer reviews)

Bog oak has been highly valued by wood carvers for centuries. Penal crosses carved out of this wood were sold to Lough Derg pilgrims in the 17th and 18th centuries. Personal jewellery and household ornaments were manufactured form this beautiful wood.
This very unique Celtic cross pendant will be hand-carved for you, or a loved one, in my studio on the West of Ireland.

Hand-carved on the ancient Irish bog oak, this Celtic cross pendant is the perfect gift for anyone with Irish heritage or for someone who resonates with the Celtic myths and traditions of the natural world.

Bog oak comes from ancient forests that once covered Ireland. Huge oaks have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. The wood is usually stained black by tannin dissolved in the acidic water. Bog-wood represents the early stages in the fossilization of wood, with further stages ultimately forming lignite and coal over a period of many millions of years.
Known as King of the forest for its strength and longevity, the oak was sacred to the ancient Celts and is considered one of the three primary magical woods.

Widely used as christian symbol, the Celtic cross has a history stretching further back than Christianity. According to legend, the ringed cross was introduced by St Patrick when he was converting pagans to Christianity.
It has been said that St Patrick combined the Christian cross with the pagan sun to give the newly converted followers the idea of the importance of the cross by linking it with the symbolism of the life-giving properties of the sun. In the mid-19th century, a Celtic revival led to an increased use of the ringed cross in Ireland, and the Celtic Cross became not only a religious symbol but an emblem of Celtic identity.

More than just a piece of jewellery, this bog oak Celtic cross pendant is a connection to Ireland’s past, a symbol of nature’s enduring beauty, and a testament to the artistry of craftsmen. It’s a thoughtful gift for a loved one or a meaningful addition to your own collection.

Absolutely love my celtic cross by Juliette! This is the perfect authentic Irish gift or souvenir. It’s beautiful and hand-carved by Juliette herself, not in a factory and just the right size! I truly love that it’s made from the bog wood (turf). I was told by one of my B & B hosts of how bog vegetation becomes wood or “turf” they can cut and burn in fires, etc. It’s been done for as long as she can remember which adds some true history to this work of art. It was shipped quickly and packaged so that it was protected, with a perfect little card that explains the history of the craft, the celtic art, and where it was made etc. A perfect personal touch. I highly recommend buying this or any of Juliette’s pieces especially to support the local business and not mass production factories.

Fantastic pieces! Rather than as a necklace I asked Juliette to craft for use as an inlay for a larger work I was creating. She was able to match woods for color balance. When asked she also did a quickly delivered additional pieces.

I bought this Celtic cross for my daughter for Christmas. It is gorgeous and kind of wish I had one for myself. The history of this piece of wood brings the past to the present, I can almost here the ancient voices calling.
